Ovarian Cyst Removal Melbourne

Ovarian cysts don't have to control your life.

Are Ovarian Cysts Affecting Your Life?

Ovarian cysts are incredibly common, especially in women of childbearing age, and most of the time, they are nothing to worry about. These fluid-filled sacs form on or inside the ovaries and often resolve on their own without treatment. Many women go about their lives never knowing they had a cyst at all.

However, some ovarian cysts don’t go away quietly. Larger cysts have the potential to cause abdominal bloating, pelvic pain, or pressure. In rare cases, they may twist or rupture, which can lead to more serious complications. If a cyst is persistent, growing, or painful, your doctor may recommend a minimally invasive procedure called an ovarian cystectomy to remove it.

At Create Health, our highly experienced gynaecologists and laparoscopic surgeons offer ovarian cyst removal in Melbourne with a personalised, patient-first approach. With clinics in East Melbourne, Mount Waverley and Berwick, we’re here to support you with advanced care and genuine compassion.

What is Ovarian Cyst Removal?

If you’ve had ovarian cysts diagnosed through a pelvic ultrasound, vaginal ultrasound, CT or MRI scan, and the cyst is not resolving on its own, your doctor may refer you for surgery called an ovarian cystectomy.

An ovarian cystectomy is a procedure that aims to remove a cyst from the ovary while preserving as much normal ovarian tissue as possible. This is particularly important for younger women, where fertility and hormone balance may be priorities.

The procedure is usually done via laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, although open surgery may be required in more complex cases. Your doctor will assess your cyst, including its size, type, and any associated symptoms, and talk you through your surgical options.

Types of Ovarian Cyst Removal Surgery

  • Laparoscopic Cystectomy
This minimally invasive procedure is the most common approach. Your surgeon will insert a thin camera called a laparoscope through a small incision in your abdomen to view your pelvic organs. They then carefully remove the cyst using instruments through a few other small incisions. A laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy aims to allow for quicker recovery, minimal scarring, and often same-day discharge.
  • Open Cystectomy
In cases where the ovarian cyst is very large or may be cancerous, your surgeon may prefer an open surgical approach. This involves a single larger incision to allow for direct access to the cyst and surrounding tissue. While recovery is slightly longer, it is sometimes the most appropriate option for some cases.
  • Oophorectomy
In rare cases, the cyst may overtake the entire ovary or show signs of malignancy. When this happens, removal of the ovary (oophorectomy) may be necessary. This is more common in post-menopausal women, or when normal ovarian tissue cannot be preserved.

When Is Ovarian Cyst Removal Needed?

Most functional cysts disappear on their own over time, such as with follicular cysts or corpus luteum cysts. However, surgical removal may be needed when:

  • A cyst becomes painful or causes severe pelvic pain
  • It grows large and causes abdominal bloating or pressure
  • Imaging shows a complex or abnormal growth
  • There are signs of rupture or torsion (twisting of the ovary)
  • The cyst persists beyond a few menstrual cycles
  • There’s a potential risk of ovarian cancer

Cysts that require surgical excision may include dermoid cysts, endometriomas (linked to endometriosis), and cystadenomas. These typically don’t resolve on their own and may grow larger or interfere with fertility and hormonal function.

Your Ovarian Cyst Removal Questions Answered

What causes ovarian cysts?

There are many causes of ovarian cysts. Some of the most common include:

  • Hormonal fluctuations, especially during the menstrual cycle
  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), which often results in multiple cysts
  • Endometriosis, which may cause endometriomas
  • Pregnancy, as the corpus luteum may seal shut and form a corpus luteum cyst
  • Severe pelvic infections may lead to cysts forming in or around the fallopian tubes and ovaries

What tests are used to diagnose ovarian cysts?

Pelvic and vaginal ultrasounds are most common, often supported by blood tests to measure tumour markers or imaging like MRI scans. Most ovarian cysts are not cancerous, but these tests help your doctor better understand the type and behaviour of the cyst.

Can I still get pregnant after a cystectomy?

In many cases, yes. The goal of an ovarian cystectomy is to preserve healthy ovarian tissue and maintain your ability to ovulate, potentially allowing you to become pregnant after you've recovered.

What are the risks of ovarian cystectomy?

An ovarian cystectomy is a commonly performed surgery. However, as with all procedures, there are some potential risks, including:

  • Bleeding or infection
  • Adverse reactions to anaesthesia
  • Injury to nearby structures (e.g. bladder or bowel)
  • The possibility of needing further surgical treatment
  • In rare cases, the need to remove the ovary

What is the recovery time for a cystectomy?

Most women return home the same day and start feeling better within a few days. You may need up to a week or two of rest before resuming normal activity. Your surgeon will give you tailored advice on recovery and follow-up care.
